DARK SKINNED GIRLS

DAZED

Dark Skinned Girls explores the ways in which negative stereotypes around dark-skinned women, permeate narratives in the black community.

The negative statements heard in this film were made by real people online.

Although the women in this film remain stoic and silent throughout, by the end, their expressions change, their features soften and they begin to laugh. These women are comfortable in their skin and refuse to fall prey to the stereotypes.

The film was “Dazed’s most viewed video of the year” and garnered over 1 million views across Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.

“We all know where the issue of colourism stems from, so darker skinned communities need to support instead of ostracise one another, based on skin tone. The stigma applies even more so to women, who face the pressure to attain Eurocentric beauty standards ” – Marian Edusei
