DARK SKINNED GIRLS

DAZED

Dark Skinned Girls explores the ways in which negative stereotypes around dark-skinned women, permeate narratives in the black community.

The statements heard in this film were made by real people and layered over striking portraits of dark-skinned women.

The film aims to give dark-skinned black women power. Although they remain stoic and silent throughout, by the end of the film, their expressions change, their features soften and they begin to laugh. These confident women are comfortable in their skin and refuse to fall prey to the absurd stereotypes they’re often subjected to.

The film was “Dazed’s most viewed video of the year” and garnered over 1 million views across Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.

“We all know where the issue of colourism stems from historically, so with all the information we have and the current political climate, darker skinned communities need to start supporting instead of ostracising one another, based on skin tone. Darker-skinned people are stigmatised and this applies even more so to women, who feel the pressure to attain a standard of Eurocentric beauty ” – Marian Edusei
